What you should know about the Glen Ellyn Civic Betterment Party
- The Glen Ellyn Civic Betterment Party was formed in 1931. For more than 75 years, Civc Betterment has had a single, overriding purpose: to encourage qualified persons to serve their community.
- Civic Betterment is a nominating process. It is not a political party. Any Glen Ellyn resident who is qualified to be a registered voter can participate in the Civic Betterment nominating process.
- Civic Betterment endorses candidates for election to the Village Board, the Library Board, and the offices of Village President and Village Clerk. Civic Betterment endorsed candidates are deemed to have a single goal: to serve their community. Historically, they have no organized political party backing.
- A twenty one member Civic Betterment Nominating Committee interviews prospective candidates and endorses those deemed most suitable for the position. The Civic Betterment goal is to find and nominate two qualified candidates for each position. (To assure geographic representation, the Nominating Committee is composed of representatives of various Glen Ellyn elementary school attendance areas.)
- Civic Betterment candidates present their qualifications and goals at a Town Meeting open to all Glen Ellyn residents. Candidates not endorsed by Civic Betterment may also present their qualifications. Following the candidates' presentations, Glen Ellyn residents who are eligible to vote cast their ballots. The balloting process is coordinated and supervised by the Glen Ellyn League of Women Voters.
- Civic Betterment candidates selected via the Town Meeting process appear on the ballot at the next General Election and are supported by Civic Betterment. Candidates not endorsed by Civic Betterment are on the ballot as well.
- Funding for Civic Betterment activities is provided by volunteer donations from local residents.
